Pointer

The composition Pointer is based on the analysis and time-stretched resynthesis of single-pitched instrumental sounds. During resynthesis the sounds were transposed to two new pitches (C and D) in various registers.

The title Pointer refers to the technique of analysis and resynthesis, whereby a ‘pointer’ defines the playback position in the resynthesis file. The speed at which the pointer moves has an effect on the duration of the sounding result. The pointer’s trajectory was programmed to slightly vary the sound’s resynthesis with every repetition.

The video for Pointer was made by filming the reflection of street lights and a smoking chimney in a river’s surface and then gradually multiplying these images.
